JU students asked to vacate halls by this afternoon
  17-07-2024

Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have decided to close the university for student safety.

Students must vacate the dormitories by 4 PM on Wednesday.

This decision was made during an emergency syndicate meeting on Wednesday morning and was communicated in a circular signed by the university registrar Md Abu Hasan.

The JU Syndicate held the emergency meeting following a directive from the University Grants Commission (UGC).

According to the circular, the decision was prompted by safety concerns due to incidents related to the quota movement on July 14, 15, and 16.

According to the meeting`s resolution, all academic programs at the university are suspended until further notice, although university offices will remain operational.

However, students quickly protested against the dormitory closure decision. They surrounded and vandalized the registrar`s office following the suspension of academic programs.

Additionally, more than a thousand students, armed with sticks, emerged from various dormitories.

Meanwhile, police have entered the university campus to manage the situation.
