  Flood in 11 districts leaves 13 dead, 45 lakh affected

Some 45 lakh people of 11 districts have been affected by the ongoing flood created due to heavy rainfall and onrush of upstream water from India.

Md Kamrul Hasan, secretary of Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, stated it at a press conference on the overall flood situation held at the secretariat on Friday (August 23) afternoon.

He said according to information received so far, a total of 13 people, comprising 11 men and 2 women, have died and 8,87,629 families become marooned.

Among the deceased, four died in Comilla, three in Cox`s Bazar, two in Chittagong, and one each in Feni, Noakhali, Brahmanbaria and Lakshmipur.

The 11 districts affected by the flood are -- Feni, Cumilla, Chittagong, Khagrachhari, Noakhali, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, Lakshmipur, and Cox`s Bazar.

The floods have inundated 77 upazilas and 584 unions and municipalities in these districts.

Around 44,97,535 people have been affected by the floods while, about 8,87,629 families in flooded areas have been trapped by the water.

He said a total of 160 shelter centres have been opened in the flood affected areas. Around 1, 88, 739 people have taken refuge in these shelter centres.

The Disaster Management and Relief secretary said cash Tk 3.52 crore, 20,150 metric tonnes of rice, 15,000 packets of dried food have been allocated for the flood affected areas.

The official said Army, Navy, Coastguard, BGB, Fire Service, police and students belonging to the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement are conducting rescue operations in the flood-affected areas.

According to the sources, torrential rain and upstream water have led to the flooding near the end of the monsoon season.
