  Murder at DU hall: BCL leader among 4 handed over to police

Three students arrested in connection with lynching a youth on suspicion of thief at Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall of Dhaka University were on Thursday handed over to Shahbagh Police Station in the capital.

Later, students caught another accused at Shaheed Minar area near BUET and handed him over to Shahbagh Police Station.

DU`s Assistant Proictor Dr Muhammad Rafiqul Islam stated it to reporters on Thursday evening.

He said the hall administration handed over Jalal Ahmed, former Science and Technology secretary of the Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall and a student of the Department of Physics; Mohammad Sumon, a student of the Department of Soil, Water and Environment; and Sajjad. Later, Mottakin Sakin, a student of the Department of Nutrition and Food Science Institute, was handed over to police.

Earlier, the suspects were arrested in connection with lynching Tofazzal at the Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall of Dhaka University on Wednesday night.

DU Proctor Professor Dr Saifuddin Ahmad confirmed about the arrest.
The proctor said those three students were arrested as primary evidence of beating Tofazzal was found against them.

Being the plaintiff, Dhaka University Estate superviser Amanullah filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station regarding Tofazzal murder.

Besides, the hall administration formed an inquiry committee. The committee was asked to submit inquiry report by 6:00pm on Thursday. The incident took place at the Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall.

The deceased, identified as Tofazzal from Barisal, was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead.

Witnesses said that students caught Tofazzal around 8:30-9:00pm, suspecting him of theft. He was beaten multiple times in the hall`s guestroom until 10:00pm.

At one point, he was even fed at the university canteen before being assaulted again. His condition worsened after prolonged interrogation, and he was taken to the hospital around midnight, where he was pronounced dead.
