  5 auto-rickshaw passengers killed being hit by train in Cumilla

Five auto-rickshaw passengers were killed and two others injured on Tuesday when a train hit them at a railway crossing in Burichang upazila of Cumilla district.

The accident occurred around 10:30 am at Kalikapur railway crossing under Bakshimul union of the upazila.

The dead were identified as Rafiq Mia, Lutfa Begum, Sanu Mia, Safarjan Begum and Saju Mia of Bakshimul village under the upazila.


Laksam Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Emran Hossain said a passenger auto-rickshaw was crossing rail line at Kalikapur in the morning. At that time, a Dhaka-bound Chattala Express train from Chittagong ran over the auto-rickshaw. Four passengers died on the spot as the three wheeler skidded off the railway tracks.

Four others were seriously injured. Locals rescued them and rushed to the upazila health complex where another passenger died.
