The chill of winter has firmly set in across Panchagarh district, known as the "Himalayan daughter" as it has been recording the lowest temperatures in the country for the past nine days.

While the temperature drops drastically during the night, daytime temperatures still feel warm, leading to a contrasting weather pattern that has increased incidences of fever, cold, and other winter-related illnesses.

On Wednesday morning (December 4), the temperature was recorded at 11.4°C at 9:00 AM, a slight increase from the 11.7°C recorded earlier at 6:00 AM. This marks a small rise compared to the previous day`s readings.

In various areas, the day began with bright sunshine but the night brought severe cold. Despite the chilly mornings, the presence of sunlight prevents the cold from affecting daily activities. By early morning, tea workers, stone laborers and people from various sectors head out for work despite the cold.

Locals told that the cold breeze sets in after sunset, with the chill becoming more intense as night progresses. To cope with the cold, people use blankets, quilts, and bedding to stay warm at night. By 9:00 AM, the cold recedes but the fluctuating weather between day and night has led to an increase in cold-related ailments such as fever, cold, cough, and respiratory issues in many households.

At Panchagarh General Hospital and other local health centers, there has been a rise in patients suffering from cold-related illnesses. Children and the elderly are particularly affected by cold, cough, pneumonia and diarrhea, requiring medical attention. Doctors are advising increased awareness about health precautions and providing treatment accordingly.

Jitendra Nath, in charge of Teesta Weather Observatory in Tetulia, Panchagarh, said, "Although there has been a slight increase in temperature, Panchagarh has been recording the lowest temperatures in the country for past nine days. On Wednesday morning, the temperature was recorded at 11.4°C, with a humidity level of 85%. On Tuesday morning, it was 11°C."
