  04-12-2024

Several parts of India`s Telangana felt tremors as a 5.3 magnitude earthquake hit the state on Wednesday.

The tremor was recorded around 7.27 AM at a depth of 40 km, according to the National Centre for Seismology. “EQ of M: 5.3, On: 04/12/2024 07:27:02 IST, Lat: 18.44 N, Long: 80.24 E, Depth: 40 Km, Location: Mulugu, Telangana,” the National Center for Seismology posted on X.

The epicenter of the quake was at the Godavari riverbed near Mulugu. Soon after the quake, many CCTV footage showing widespread tremors were shared by the residents on social media. A video captures a CCTV camera—on a terrace— shaking violently. Another video shows the insides of a home, capturing a young girl getting ready for school and is taken aback after a photo frame falls due to strong tremors, according to The Indian Express news.

According to the United States Geological Survey, an earthquake occurs when the tectonic plates get stuck at their edges due to friction. When the stress at the Earth’s edge exceeds the friction, an earthquake occurs, releasing energy in the form of waves that travel through the Earth’s crust, resulting in tremors.
