At least five individuals were injured in a factional clash between two groups of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) centering the cards of Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) in Rajshahi`s Puthia upazila on Sunday.

The clash incident took place around 11:00 AM at Biraldaha Mazar area in the upazila.

Among the injured are Rafiqul Islam, 44, and Mithun Abu Dawud.

According to locals, there had been a dispute between the union parishad member Rafiqul Islam, loyal to Puthia upazila BNP leader and former upazila parishad chairman Anowarul Islam Jumma, and Mithun, loyal to the UP BNP member secretary Entajul Haque Babu, over the TCB cards.

The clash ensued when Mithun demanded TCB cards from Rafiqul in the morning. The two groups, at one stage, swooped on each other with lethal weapons, leaving five people of the both groups injured.

Locals rescued the injured and took them to Puthia Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

When the false news of Rafiq`s death escalated in the area, his supporters blocked the highway, causing a huge traffic jam on both sides of the highway.

Being informed, a team of Army official rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said Puthia Police Station officer-in-charge Kabir Hossain. Legal action would be taken against those found involved in the incident, the OC added.
