A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced former Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) driver Abdul Malek to five years in prison and his wife Nargis Begum to three years for amassing wealth beyond known sources of income.
Judge Md Zakaria Hossain of Dhaka Special Judge Court-6 delivered the verdict in presence of both convicts. Malek was produced from jail, while Nargis, previously on bail, appeared in court. Both were sent to prison following the verdict.
In addition to the prison terms, the court fined each Tk 20,000, with three months` imprisonment in default. The court also ordered the confiscation of Tk 11,093,050 in illegal assets in favor of the state.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case in February 2021 and submitted the chargesheet in October of the same year. Charges were framed in May 2022 and 10 witnesses testified during the trial.
This verdict adds to Malek’s growing list of convictions. In March 2024, he was sentenced to 13 years in a separate corruption case. Earlier, in September 2021, he received a 30-year sentence under the Arms Act.
