Manikganj farmers celebrate bumper wheat harvest
  26-04-2025

(BSS) - Farmers in Manikganj have completed wheat harvesting, achieving a bumper yield that has brought happiness across the district.

Due to favorable weather and timely agricultural support, wheat production in the district exceeded expectations, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).

The DAE initially set a target to produce 2,720 tonnes of wheat from 800 hectares of land. However, farmers increased cultivation to 852 hectares, and actual production surpassed the target.

In recent years, wheat cultivation had seen a decline, but this season saw a renewed interest among farmers across all seven upazilas. The growing demand for wheat encouraged more farmers to plant the crop.

Abdul Mozid, a farmer from Baghutia village in Daulatpur upazila, said the season went well due to the suitable weather and fertile land.

He also noted that the authorities supplied seeds and fertilizers on time, which supported successful farming.

Md. Hamid Ali, a farmer from Manikganj Sadar upazila, said wheat farming has steadily increased over the past few years.

Wheat requires less irrigation, and there is a strong demand for it in the market throughout the year, he added.

More farmers are turning to wheat because of its growing demand and shifting food habits in the region, said DAE deputy director Dr. Robiah Noor Ahmed.
