Nat’l grid failure plunges 21 southern districts into darkness
  26-04-2025

A fault in the national grid disrupted power supply across several districts in Dhaka Division, as well as all districts in Khulna and Barishal Divisions, leaving 21 southern districts of Bangladesh in darkness on Saturday, April 26.

The issue emerged at 5:48 pm, according to Mohammad Haider Ali, Managing Director of the Khulna Region at West Zone Power Distribution Company (WZPDCL), who confirmed the outage to Jago News.

The blackout affected Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Jashore, Narail, Jhenaidah, Magura, Kushtia, Meherpur, Chuadanga, Faridpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Gopalganj, Barishal, Jhalokati, Pirojpur, Patuakhali, Barguna, and Bhola. Haider Ali reported that power was restored in Khulna city by 7:50 pm, two hours after the initial disruption, but full restoration across all districts remains incomplete.

"Power supply has resumed in some areas, but we’re still working to restore it fully," Haider Ali said. "We hope to resolve the issue by tonight, though an exact timeline is uncertain." Efforts to normalise the situation are ongoing.

The issue originated at the Aminbazar-Gopalganj transmission line. The Aminbazar-Gopalganj transmission line has crucial role in power transmission for the southwestern region, ensuring reliable electricity distribution from the Rampal and Payra thermal power plants.
