Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, has called on students to harness their talent and passion to build a sustainable, eco-centric Bangladesh.

Speaking as the chief guest at The Daily Star-HSBC 24th O and A Level Awards Presentation Ceremony 2025, held at the China-Bangladesh Friendship Exhibition Centre in Purbachal, Rizwana emphasized the urgent need for responsible development and environmental stewardship.

“We must consume less, pollute less, reuse, recycle, and ensure fair distribution of resources,” she said. “Only by redefining our relationship with nature can we break the cycle of environmental degradation.”

Addressing the high-achieving students, she said, “What once seemed impossible is now within reach because of the promise you carry. A new Bangladesh awaits—one that values collective responsibility over individual success.”

While acknowledging the value of academic excellence and global exposure, Rizwana urged students to return and serve their homeland. “Brain drain must stop. Go abroad to learn if needed—but bring your skills home. Without your contribution, how can we expect real change?”

She also challenged conventional definitions of development. “It’s not about owning houses or cars. True progress means sustainable, inclusive growth where nature is at the heart of all decisions.”

Highlighting the widespread use of plastic bottles at the event, she noted the urgent need for behavioral change. “Convenience is no excuse. If we don’t reduce plastic waste, the burden of cleanup falls on the people. Reusable alternatives must be the norm.”

In her concluding remarks, Rizwana congratulated the awardees and reminded them of their higher purpose. “Serve Bangladesh selflessly. What this country has given you, pass it on to the next generation.”

The first session of the event was attended by Law Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul as chief guest. Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam presided over the function, which brought together students, educators, parents, and senior officials from HSBC and The Daily Star.

A total of 2,391 students received awards this year, including 176 who achieved world-best and country-best results, and six who earned the highest distinctions. The ceremony began with a tribute to school principals, honoring them with crests for their leadership and dedication.

The event was marked by inspiring speeches and a celebration of academic excellence with a strong call to shape a greener, more responsible future.
