Mahbub Morshed, Managing Director of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), surrendered before a Dhaka court on Monday and secured bail in a defamation case filed by Abdul Hai Sikder, Editor of daily Jugantor.
Appearing before Metropolitan Magistrate Zia Uddin`s court through his lawyer,
Morshed appeared before Metropolitan Magistrate Zia Uddin`s court in the morning and later, was granted bail on a bond of Tk 500 following a hearing.
The case was filed on March 23, alleging that Morshed, along with Khairul Alam, former Joint Secretary of the Dhaka Union of Journalists, and Asaduzzaman Asad, defamed Sikder via Facebook posts. Asad was also described in the complaint as a financial contributor to the Awami League.
According to the complaint, on March 17, Morshed posted a poem on Facebook, falsely attributing it to Abdul Hai Sikder. The post suggested that Sikder had written a derogatory piece about BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, questioning his political alignment.
Similarly, Khairul Alam reposted the poem, claiming Sikder had once gifted it to former President Hussain Muhammad Ershad. Asaduzzaman Asad also shared the poem, stating he received it via Messenger from a nationalist colleague and reiterated the same narrative.
Earlier, the court had recorded Sikder’s statement and issued summons for the accused to appear.
