A court in Chattogram has ordered that Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote, be shown arrested in the case filed over the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam in the city.

The order was issued on Monday morning (May 5) by Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate SM Alauddin Mahmud following a virtual hearing, based on a petition submitted by the investigating officer of the case. Chinmoy Das was virtually produced before the court from jail, but no defense lawyer was present on his behalf during the hearing.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, Mofiz Uddin, said the investigating officer of the lawyer murder case, filed at Kotwali Police Station, submitted the application to show Chinmoy Das as arrested. He is currently in jail in connection with a separate sedition case. The court granted the petition after the hearing.

On November 26 last year, during clashes that erupted after a court rejected Chinmoy Das`s bail petition, the lawyer was hacked and beaten to death.

Four days later, Saiful’s father filed a case naming 31 individuals and accusing 10 to 15 unidentified persons. Additionally, the lawyer’s brother filed another case accusing 116 individuals over the same incident. Police also filed three separate cases over attacks on law enforcement and obstruction of duty.
