Kamrul Hasan: The interest shown by European aircraft manufacturer Airbus in the modernization and expansion of the fleet of Biman Bangladesh Airlines has opened up fresh prospects for the national carrier. The issue was highlighted during a courtesy meeting between Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam Rita, MP, and Airbus Vice President Edward Delahaye.

The meeting, held on Tuesday morning (May 5) at the ministry’s conference room, focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and advancing the development of the aviation sector.

State Minister M. Rashiduzzaman Millat, Ministry Secretary Fahmida Akhtar (NDC), and Managing Director of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Kaiser Sohel Ahmed were also present.

During the meeting, the Airbus delegation expressed its interest in helping Biman develop a mixed fleet strategy. Many airlines around the world are adopting this approach to enhance operational efficiency, diversify route management, and maintain cost control.

According to aviation experts, incorporating different types of aircraft within the same fleet increases flexibility in operating both short-haul and long-haul routes, while also improving the quality of passenger service.

In this regard, Minister Afroza Khanam Rita said that the fleet development initiative is being pursued with the goal of transforming Biman Bangladesh Airlines into a modern, competitive, and passenger-friendly airline.

She also expressed her commitment to working closely with Airbus and emphasized the importance of implementing long-term plans through mutual cooperation.

Analysts believe that direct partnership with a global aircraft manufacturer could have a positive impact on the country’s civil aviation sector. In addition to adding new aircraft to the fleet, such cooperation could also play an important role in technology transfer and in developing a skilled workforce.

Relevant stakeholders believe that high-level meetings of this nature are not limited to fleet expansion alone; rather, they will further strengthen the path toward elevating Bangladesh’s aviation sector to international standards.
