Saudi Embassy-backed initiative targets 4,000 patients, 400 eye surgeries

Rangpur Bureau: Saudi Arabia has launched a week-long voluntary medical campaign in Rangpur to combat blindness and improve access to eye care for underprivileged people in Bangladesh, highlighting the Kingdom’s continued commitment to humanitarian assistance and bilateral cooperation.

The campaign, titled “Noor Al-Saudia Voluntary Campaign to Combat Blindness and Its Causes,” is being conducted from October 8 to 15, 2026, by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), in collaboration with its local partner, Al-Basar International Foundation.

A Saudi volunteer medical team has been deployed to Rangpur under the initiative, which aims to examine 4,000 beneficiaries, perform 400 eye surgeries and distribute 1,000 pairs of eyeglasses to people in need.

The programme seeks to address preventable causes of blindness, expand access to essential eye care and ease the financial burden of treatment on disadvantaged communities.

The initiative underscores the role of KSrelief in delivering humanitarian and medical assistance to vulnerable populations across the world, regardless of nationality, religion or background. Its approach places particular emphasis on alleviating human suffering and improving the quality of life of people who have limited access to healthcare.

For many low-income families, eye diseases and vision problems can affect education, employment and everyday activities, while the cost of consultations, surgery and corrective glasses can put treatment beyond their reach. By bringing specialised medical services directly to Rangpur, the campaign seeks to help address these challenges.

The planned examinations will allow medical professionals to assess patients` eye conditions and identify those requiring further treatment. The surgical component is intended to provide necessary interventions for eligible patients, while the distribution of eyeglasses will help beneficiaries with vision problems improve their daily functioning.

KSrelief is a key component of Saudi Arabia`s international humanitarian response, supporting relief, healthcare and other assistance programmes in countries facing humanitarian needs. Through partnerships with local and international organisations, the centre works to deliver services to vulnerable communities and strengthen access to essential support.

The Rangpur campaign also reflects the importance of cooperation between Saudi humanitarian institutions and Bangladeshi partners in implementing programmes tailored to local needs. The involvement of Al-Basar International Foundation and the International Eye Foundation highlights the role of specialised organisations in delivering medical services and advancing eye health.

The Saudi Embassy in Dhaka serves as an important channel for strengthening relations between the two countries, including cooperation in humanitarian assistance, healthcare, trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges. Initiatives such as the Rangpur eye care campaign provide a practical dimension to the broader partnership by bringing medical support to communities beyond the capital.

Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia maintain longstanding relations, reinforced by religious, cultural, economic and people-to-people ties. Saudi Arabia is also a major destination for Bangladeshi migrant workers, making cooperation between the two countries significant for millions of families.

Beyond its immediate medical objectives, the Rangpur initiative carries a broader message about the value of international solidarity. Timely eye examinations, appropriate surgery and access to corrective glasses can help people preserve or improve their vision, participate more fully in society and pursue educational and economic opportunities.

The campaign is expected to contribute to reducing the burden of avoidable vision impairment among its beneficiaries while strengthening cooperation between the organisations involved.

As the initiative concludes on October 15, its planned targets—4,000 medical examinations, 400 eye surgeries and 1,000 pairs of eyeglasses—represent a focused effort to make essential eye care more accessible to people in need.

The programme demonstrates how humanitarian partnerships can translate international goodwill into practical healthcare support, while further strengthening the bonds between Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh.
