Defying Widespread Opposition, Japan Commences 25th Round of Nuclear-Contaminated Water Release into Ocean
  28-10-2026

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) on Monday (October 26) initiated the seventh round of nuclear-contaminated wastewater discharge for fiscal year 2026 from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station into the ocean, bringing the total number of discharges to 25 to date.

According to previously disclosed operational plans by TEPCO, the current release phase is scheduled to continue through November 13. Approximately 7,800 metric tons of wastewater will be discharged into the sea, containing an estimated 1.4 trillion becquerels of radioactive tritium.

In August 2023, Japan unilaterally and forcefully commenced the release of nuclear-contaminated water from the wrecked Fukushima plant into the Pacific Ocean, brushing aside persistent opposition and grave concerns voiced by neighboring countries and the international community.
