Barrister Sumon on two-day remand
  21, November, 2024, 8:48:55:PM

A court has placed former member of parliament (MP) Barrister Sayedul Huq Sumon from Habiganj-4 constituency on a two-day remand.

Habiganbj Judicial Magistrate Court`s judge Kamrul Hasan on Thursday afternoon placed Sumon on the remand on Thursday.

Earlier, investigation officer (IO) of the case sub-inspector Liton Chowdhury pleaded to the court to place Barrister Sumon on a 10-day remand in a case filed over attacking the Anti-discrimination movement. The public prosecutor APP Nurul Islam Chowdhury confirmed it.

He said the case was filed on September 11 last against some 200 people including mentioning the names of 97 accused including Syed Sayedul Huq Sumon for attacking the anti-discrimination student movement at Shayestaganj Golchattar Bridge under Chunarughat upazila on July 16 last. Sumon was arrested from Mirpur in the capital on October 22 last. Since then he had been at the Dhaka Central Jail.

Meanwhile, since Barrister Sumon`s remand hearing was held on Thursday, he was shifted to Habiganj Jail on Wednesday from the Dhaka Central Jail.

Barrister Sumon`s lawyer Md Shahidul Islam said Sumon was implicated in a false case regarding the Anti-Discrimination Stduent Movement.

He said: "We told the court that Barrister Sumon was not present at the place of occurrence at the time and date mentioned in the case. We also mentioned that he has not involvement in the case. It was stated in the case that he had ordered indirectly. But, there is no proof who he was ordered. In fact, he was implicated in the case to destroy his personal career."

Earlier, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders and workers staged demonstration at the Habiganj court premises demanding death sentence of Barrister Sumon when he was being brought at the court. They also hurled eggs on the prison van carrying Sumon.

Besides, a supporter of Barrister Sumon tried to record the court proceedings entering the court. He fled the court being chased by lawyers.
