Dhaka University (DU) witnessed an unprecedented cleanliness operation as Dhaka University Central Students` Union (DUCSU) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) deployed over 1,300 cleaning personnel in a six-hour blitz targeting campus-wide waste and mosquito breeding sites on Saturday.
The special drive, running from 7:30 AM to noon, marked a significant institutional collaboration between student leadership and civic authorities.
This massive mobilisation drew workers from Dhaka University`s Waste Management and Health Departments alongside DSCC staff, systematically clearing drains, footpaths and campus grounds.
Teams painted traffic islands and applied mosquito repellent across university premises, whilst a public awareness rally reinforced environmental responsibility messages amongst students and citizens.
Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Niaz Ahmad Khan characterised the operation as a remarkable institutional partnership, describing it as "one small step in the right direction" whilst acknowledging considerable challenges ahead.
"This initiative begins today, but we have a long way to go. Environmental protection is essential for our very survival," Professor Niaz emphasised.
DUCSU Vice-President (VP) Abu Shadik Kayem revealed strategic planning behind the blitz, with 18 separate units formed across university halls coordinating simultaneous cleaning operations. Multiple teams tackled different faculties and premises throughout the six-hour window.
"The campaign will be meaningful only if we personally refrain from littering," Kayem stressed, outlining ambitions for Dhaka University becoming a `Clean and Green Campus` that would inspire nationwide environmental consciousness.
Local Government Division Secretary Rezaul Maksud Jahedi, DSCC Administrator Shahjahan Miah and DUCSU and Hall Union leaders attended the initiative.
