Education sector to see increased allocation

Finance Minister AH Mahmood Ali today (June 6) proposed an allocation of Tk94,710 crore for the education sector in the national budget of Bangladesh for the fiscal year 2024-2025, up from Tk88,163 crore in the current fiscal.

The finance minister made the allocation proposal while placing the national budget at the National Parliament.

In the proposed budget, Tk38,819 crore has been proposed against the Primary and Mass Education sector in the national budget for FY 2024-25 while it was Tk34,722 crore in this sector for FY 2023-24.

Besides, Tk44,108 crore has been proposed against the Secondary and Higher Education Sector, which was Tk42,839 crore in FY 2023-24 and Tk11,783 crore against Technical and Madrasa Education Division in FY2024-25, which was Tk10,602 crore in FY 2023-24.

The allocation is 11.9% of the total budget and 1.7% of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product).

"Smart citizens will be instrumental to building a developed, prosperous and smart Bangladesh by 2041. Therefore, we need to properly train our future generation in science, technology and technical education to achieve the dream of building smart Bangladesh," Mahmood Ali said in his budget speech.

Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali presented the proposed budget for the 2024-2025 fiscal year amounting to Tk797,000 crore (Tk7.97 trillion) in parliament on Thursday.

This was his first budget unveiling and the first budget after the reelection of the Awami League government in January.

The allocation is 11.9% of the total budget and 1.7% of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product).
