Shakib keeps ODI return in limbo amid Abu Dhabi T10 campaign
  23, November, 2024, 10:33:4:PM

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has deferred his decision on returning to ODI cricket until after the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament, where he is captaining the Bangla Tigers.

The tournament, which began Thursday (November 21), marks Shakib`s focus for now, as he hinted during a captains` press conference on November 20.

"I will think about it (ODI return) after this tournament," Shakib said with a sly smile when pressed about his future in Bangladesh`s ODI team.

Shakib`s recent career decisions have drawn significant attention. He announced his T20I retirement but expressed interest in continuing ODIs until the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. However, his absence from Afghanistan ODI series raised questions about his commitment to the format.

His last ODI appearance was against Sri Lanka during the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India.

Bangladesh`s next ODI assignment is a three-match series against West Indies starting December 8. With no other ODIs scheduled before the Champions Trophy, these matches are crucial for Shakib if he plans to remain part of the squad for the global event. Yet, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has not clarified Shakib`s availability and the player himself remains noncommittal.

"All focus is on this tournament (for now)," Shakib responded when asked about his Champions Trophy plans.

Meanwhile, Shakib seemed optimistic about the Bangla Tigers` prospects in the Abu Dhabi T10.

"The plan for the tournament is up our sleeve, we can`t reveal it publicly," he said. "All the teams here are strong and aiming for the title. We share the same ambition and will try our best. I believe we have a well-balanced side."

As the Abu Dhabi T10 progresses, fans and analysts will closely watch Shakib`s performance and await his decision regarding a return to Bangladesh`s ODI setup. With the clock ticking toward the Champions Trophy, his potential participation remains a matter of significant interest.
