Students from the seven affiliated colleges of Dhaka University staged a blockade at Science Lab and Technical intersections in Dhaka on Sunday evening, disrupting traffic in these key areas.
The protest was sparked by allegations of misconduct by Dhaka University`s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education), Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed.
According to the students, the Pro-Vice Chancellor behaved inappropriately when they approached him with concerns about reducing admission quotas and other ongoing issues affecting the colleges.
Protesters also claimed that he dismissed them rudely, stating he was unaware of the problems facing the seven colleges. The students further alleged that a memorandum regarding these issues was submitted to the Pro-Vice Chancellor 21 days earlier but was not addressed.
Additionally, they stated that he openly admitted to being unfamiliar with the affiliated colleges and their challenges.
In response to this alleged behavior, the students announced a list of five demands, which include:
1. Eliminating the unreasonable quota system in the seven colleges` admission process starting from the 2024–25 academic session.
2. Ensuring that admissions align with the seating capacity of classrooms in the seven colleges. 3. Regulating student intake based on the teacher-to-student ratio.
4. Introducing a negative marking system in the admission test for the seven colleges. 5. Establishing a separate account for admission fees, independent of Dhaka University, to ensure transparency under the supervision of a specialized committee formed by the Ministry of Education.
A student representative Abdur Rahman called for an apology from the Pro-Vice Chancellor for his alleged misconduct.
The protests have caused significant traffic disruptions in the capital, with commuters facing long delays. Students stated they would continue their demonstrations until their demands are met and the Pro-Vice Chancellor apologizes for his behavior.
