Three members of a family were beaten to death in Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla on Thursday (3 July) over allegations of involvement in drug trading. The incident took place around 9:30 am in Koraibari village under Akbapur Union of Bangra Police Station.

The deceased have been identified as Ruby Akter, her daughter Jonaki, and her son Russel.

Quoting local residents, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bangra Police Station, Mahfuzur Rahman, said that villagers launched a mob attack on four members of Russel’s family, accusing them of being involved in drug dealing. Ruby, Jonaki, and Russel died on the spot, while another family member was injured and taken to a nearby hospital. Police have not yet confirmed the identity of the injured individual.

Upon receiving the news, Comilla Superintendent of Police Nazir Ahmed, along with a team from the police and several intelligence agencies, visited the scene, the OC added.

Former chairman of Akbapur Union, Shah Alam, said, “As far as I have learned, members of the victim’s family had long been involved in drug trading. Enraged by this, local residents beat four members of the family on Thursday morning. Three died on the spot, while one was hospitalised.”
