Sharif clinches title for 2nd time in Jabbarer Boli Khela

(BSS)- Bagha Sharif, hailing from Homna of Cumilla, became the second time champion in the 116th edition of the historic Abdul Jabbarer Boli Khela (wrestling competition) here today.

Nearly 120 Boli (wrestler) aged from 10 to 70 years from different parts of the country participated in the competition held at city’s Laldighi Maidan.

Baga Sharif secured the trophy in a 10.34-minute fight beating his compatriot Mohammad Rashed Boli.

Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Hashib Aziz declared the 116th edition of the Boli Khela open at 4:30pm today.

The traditional Boli Khela cum Boishaki Fair popularly known as "Jabbarer Boli Khela" held on April 25 every year.

A three-member panel led by former ward Hefazur Rahman was the referee.

Dr Shahdat Hossain, mayor of Chattogram City Corporation attended the function as the chief guest and handed over the trophy to the winners.

Shawkat Anwar Badal, member secretary of the Bolikhela organizing committee and grandson of Abdul Jabbar Sawdagar was present on the occasion.

The century-old event which is marked by a three-day fair of locally made handicrafts, artifacts, earthen goods and indigenous household items at one and half a kilometer adjoining area of Laldighi Maidan will formally end tomorrow but continue till Sunday.

Renowned social worker and businessman late Abdul Jabber Sawdagar on his personal initiative launched the competition in 1909 to inspire the youth folks to build up their body to fight against British rulers.
