  31, May, 2025, 10:40:16:PM

Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin held a bilateral meeting with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao at InterContinental in Dhaka on Saturday, focusing on deepening trade and technological cooperation.

The meeting culminated in the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to promote free trade and e-commerce collaboration.

Sheikh Bashir Uddin sought China’s expertise in drone technology to transform Bangladesh’s agricultural sector.

“Drone technology can revolutionise fertilizer application, seed sowing, pesticide spraying, and crop monitoring,” he said, emphasising its potential to boost productivity and strengthen bilateral ties. Minister Wang expressed China’s readiness to support Bangladesh in smart agriculture and drone technology, stating, “We are eager to enhance cooperation in agriculture and digital technology to increase productivity.”

The Commerce Adviser highlighted Bangladesh’s untapped potential in marine fisheries due to a lack of modern fishing vessels and processing technology.

“With China’s technical assistance and advanced fishing vessels, we can boost deep-sea fishing, increase export earnings, and create jobs,” he said. Wang affirmed China’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s fisheries sector and maritime resource development.

Sheikh Bashir Uddin showcased Bangladesh’s demographic advantage, with affordable, skilled, and experienced labour.

He invited Chinese investment in sectors like leather, light engineering, agri-machinery, agro-technology, food processing, and pharmaceuticals, saying, “Invest in Bangladesh to drive economic growth for both nations.” Wang responded positively, expressing interest in expanding investment cooperation.

Reflecting on the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, Wang noted the steady growth in China-Bangladesh trade and China’s contributions to Bangladesh’s socio-economic development through various projects. Both sides expressed optimism about deepening economic relations in the future.

The meeting was attended by Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen, the Director General of Outward Investment and Economic Cooperation, and the Director General of the Department of Asian Affairs from China’s Ministry of Commerce. The Bangladesh delegation included the Commerce Secretary, Industry Secretary, Agriculture Secretary, and the Chairman of the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission.

Two MoUs were signed to establish a joint working group for promoting free trade and e-commerce cooperation. Sheikh Bashir Uddin signed on behalf of Bangladesh, and Wang Wentao signed for China.

Wang Wentao arrived in Dhaka on May 31 for a three-day visit, accompanied by a delegation of Chinese businessmen and investors, signalling a strong intent to bolster economic ties with Bangladesh.
