Foundation laid for Shaheed Abu Sayeed memorial in Rangpur
  16, July, 2025, 4:31:39:PM

The foundation stones for Shaheed Abu Sayeed Memorial Monument, Street Memory Stamp, Memorial Arch, and a Museum have been officially laid in honor of Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayeed, who was killed during the anti-discrimination student movement.

The inauguration took place on Wednesday morning around 10:30 AM, with Abu Sayeed`s father Mokbul Hossain present. The event was officiated by members of the interim government, including Legal Affairs Advisor Prof. Dr. Asif Nazrul, Education Advisor Prof. Dr. Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, Environment Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan, and Liberation War Affairs Advisor Faruq-e-Azam.

These initiatives are part of a wider observance of Shaheed Abu Sayeed’s martyrdom anniversary and July Martyrs` Day, organized by the university administration. Various commemorative programs were held throughout the day.

Earlier in the morning, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shawkat Ali, along with faculty members and staff, visited Abu Sayeed’s grave to pay their respects. A mourning rally, attended by teachers and students, later paraded through the university campus.

On this day last year, Abu Sayeed, a 12th batch English department student at Begum Rokeya University, was shot dead by police in front of the university’s Gate 1 during a protest against discrimination. His death sparked a nationwide uprising, which eventually escalated into a mass movement, leading to the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 of the same year.
