Woman’s body recovered 36 hours after falling into open drain
  29, July, 2025, 11:55:14:AM

The body of a woman named Faria Tasnim Jyoti was recovered 36 hours after she went missing by falling into an uncovered drain in Tongi, Gazipur.

Her body was found around 9:00 am on Tuesday (July 29) in Shalikchura Beel. Earlier, on Sunday (July 27) at around 9:00 pm, she fell into a drain near the Hossain Market area on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Tongi.

Md Shahin Alam, Senior Station Officer of the Tongi Fire Service, confirmed the incident. He said the drain where Faria Tasnim fell flows into the beel in Tongi, where her body was recovered during a search operation on Tuesday morning.

Faria Tasnim was a resident of Mosque Para in ward number 4 of Chuadanga Municipality. She was the daughter of the late Oliullah Ahmad Bablu. She lived near Hossain Market and worked for a pharmaceutical company.

Relatives said she was walking along the roadside toward Tongi Hospital to deliver medicine when the incident occurred.

Police and eyewitnesses reported that a section of the drain beside the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway near Tongi Imperial Hospital has been uncovered for a long time due to the absence of a concrete slab. Authorities had not installed any slab or cautionary signboards in the area.

While walking, she accidentally fell into the open drain and was swept away by the strong current, leading to her disappearance.

Following the incident, fire service personnel from Gazipur and workers from the city corporation immediately began rescue operations.

Locals blamed the accident on negligence by BRT authorities, stating that leaving the drain open without a slab in such a busy area has put people’s lives at risk.

Faria Tasnim’s elder brother, Shovon, said that after her mobile phone was switched off, they searched for her in various ways. Finally, around 7:00 am on Monday, he visited the spot and found his sister’s shoe, confirming her disappearance.
