Tarique urges vigilance against fascism ahead of polls
  31, July, 2025, 9:36:36:PM

Online Report : BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Thursday called on the people of Bangladesh, including women, to remain vigilant against the threat of fascism and extremism ahead of the upcoming national election, describing it as crucial for shaping a just and democratic future.

Speaking virtually at a discussion titled “Women’s Contribution to the Anti-Fascist Movement”, organised by Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal at Shaheed Abu Sayed International Convention Centre, Tarique underscored the importance of women’s active role in political and social transformation.

“If we are to build the kind of Bangladesh that a mother envisions, then this upcoming election is critical. Fascism, extremism and radicalism must not be allowed to rise again. I urge all mothers and sisters across the country to remain alert and engaged,” he said.

He added that BNP’s vision for the future is deeply tied to the dignity, safety and empowerment of women. “No nation can move forward by excluding half its population. Women’s participation is essential in every sphere—political, economic, and social.”

Highlighting the importance of inclusive national planning, Tarique said BNP has designed its policies to reflect the hopes and needs of women and pledged concrete action to ensure their empowerment.

Among the initiatives he outlined was a proposed “Family Card” programme, aimed at supporting 5 million marginalised families.

If BNP returns to power, the cards will be issued in the name of female heads of households and used to provide monthly financial aid or food assistance. “This will not only uplift women economically but also contribute to family self-reliance and societal equity,” he explained.

Tarique also stressed the importance of women’s education and skills development to reduce discrimination, prevent domestic violence and enable greater participation in the workforce. “Empowered women create liberated families. Our policies are rooted in human values, focused on creating opportunities, safety, and dignity for all.”

Reflecting on the sacrifices of women in Bangladesh’s pro-democracy struggles, he remembered those who gave their lives during the mass uprisings of July–August, including the loss of his own brother, Arafat Rahman Koko, which his mother Khaleda Zia endured. “Countless women have suffered loss and hardship for the cause of democracy. It is now our duty to honour their sacrifices by building a humane Bangladesh for all.”

The event also featured emotional testimonies from the families of martyrs who lost their lives during the anti-fascist movement.

In recognition of their sacrifices, Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal awarded honorary medals to their family members. A documentary showcasing women’s contributions to the anti-fascist struggle was also screened.

Tarique concluded by calling for unity among all democracy-loving citizens; men, women and children of all communities, to work together toward a safe, just and democratic Bangladesh.
