We want to build politics of accountability by learning from past: Tarique Rahman
  7, October, 2025, 12:47:39:PM

BNP`s acting chairman Tarique Rahman has said that the future BNP will be a political party based on democratic values and accountability.

He made the remarks during an interview aired on BBC Bangla on Tuesday (October 7).

“Our main political goals are the people, the country, and its sovereignty,” said Tarique. “We want to build a stronger democratic foundation by learning from the positive aspects of our past.”

He expressed pride in the initiation of Bangladesh’s garments industry and the foundation of remittance inflows from expatriates during BNP’s rule. “Under the leadership of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, we made a famine-stricken country self-sufficient in food. At one point, Bangladesh even exported food,” he noted.

Tarique also recalled that during the time when all political parties were banned under BAKSAL, it was BNP that reintroduced multi-party democracy in the country. “That part of our history continues to inspire us,” he added.

When asked about political accountability, Tarique responded, “There may be allegations—those will be taken into consideration. If given the opportunity, we will prove what true accountability should look like. It can`t be done overnight; it needs to be built gradually.”

He emphasized that the responsibility of nation-building doesn`t lie with politicians alone. “Citizens are partners in this journey. I promise that we will make every effort to establish a culture of accountability,” he stated.

Speaking about his life abroad, the BNP leader said, “I’ve been living overseas for the past 17 years. Without the support of my family, it would have been impossible to lead from this distance. I’m grateful to my wife and daughter—their support has made this difficult matter a little easier.”

He concluded by expressing gratitude to party activists and supporters: “Despite various obstacles, suppression, and persecution, those who have kept the party organized, remained active on the streets, and raised their voices for the people`s demands—I am thankful to them. From what I have seen and learned in the UK, I want to apply that experience for the benefit of our people, if given the chance.”
