Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit accorded a red-carpet reception to around 1,500 newly admitted students of 54th batch through a "Freshers` Reception and Career Guideline" programme on Saturday.
The event began at 9:30 AM at Zahir Raihan Auditorium and continued till 3:30 PM, with JU Shibir President Mohibur Rahman Mohib in the chair and Secretary Mostafizur Rahman conducting the session.
JU’s Acting Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Prof Dr Mahfuzur Rahman attended the programme as the chief guest.
In his speech, the chief guest lauded the initiative and said "It is truly commendable that Islami Chhatra Shibir arranged such a wonderful programme for newcomers. All student organisations should come forward with similar initiatives for the welfare of students."
He also emphasised building a joint platform among the student unions of the country’s top four universities to protect students` rights and urged newcomers to focus on career development.
Addressing the audience, Islami Chhatra Shibir Central President Jahidul Islam said, "A new awakening has begun since August 5 and Shibir has been playing a leading role in it."
"We have faced severe oppression in the past—hundreds of our brothers were killed or disappeared but we remain committed to our ideals."he added.
He further said, "The state’s four fundamental principles contradict one another and need proper reform. Shibir has always worked for students’ welfare and will continue to do so."
Central Publication Secretary and DUCSU Vice President Abu Sadik Kayem alleged that despite achieving top positions in honours and master’s degrees, many Shibir members were denied teaching positions at universities.
Addressing the freshers, he said, "Perform prayers regularly, seek help from the Creator, and keep good company. Success in both this world and the hereafter will follow. Islami Chhatra Shibir can be your ideal mentor in this journey."
Among others, JU Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Sohel Ahmed, Proctor Prof AKM Rashidul Alam, several teachers, provosts and former Shibir leaders spoke on the occasion.
JU Central Sports Secretary Harunur Rashid Rafi, JU Shibir alumni, National Students` Power and representatives from various student organisations, along with about 1,500 new students also attended the programme.
