Carmichael College in Rangpur celebrated its 109th founding anniversary with the “Tarunno Milan” (Youth Unity) festival, a two-day event showcasing cultural and educational activities on campus.

The celebrations will end on Tuesday.

The festival kicked off Monday morning with a colorful procession around the college campus, featuring teachers and students carrying placards representing their respective departments. The inauguration ceremony included balloon and pigeon releases, followed by a cake-cutting led by the college’s former principal, Professor Rezaul Islam.

A discussion session and cultural program were presided over by the current principal, Professor Md. Mostafizur Rahman. Special guests included heads of several local colleges: Professor Md. Amjad Hossain (Government Teachers’ Training College), Professor Md. Ismail Hossain Sarkar (Government Begum Rokeya College), Professor Md. Borhan Uddin (Government City College), Vice Principal Professor Md. Habibur Rahman, and Teachers’ Council Secretary Professor Dilip Kumar Roy.

The anniversary festivities featured 30 exhibition stalls displaying a variety of student-made items, including traditional foods such as khichuri, pitha, payesh, noodles, pudding, as well as handicrafts, bangles, and drinks. Students and teachers engaged in dance, music, and social interaction, creating a vibrant atmosphere. A cultural program was held later in the afternoon.

Participants emphasized the need to preserve the college’s legacy through infrastructure development, enhancement of educational quality, increased budget allocation, and the introduction of modern academic departments.

Founded on November 10, 1916, by the then Governor of undivided Bengal, Lord Thomas David Baron Carmichael, the college now hosts nearly 25,000 students across 19 departments.
