Anti-polythene drives: Over 38,000kg polythene seized
  27, November, 2024, 9:55:43:PM

Department of Environment (DoE) has intensified its crackdown on illegal polythene production and distribution, conducting 162 mobile court drives nationwide between November 3 and 26, 2024.

These operations resulted in fines totaling Tk 19,16,300 imposed on 336 business entities. Additionally, authorities seized a staggering 38,178 kilograms of polythene during the campaign, reinforcing efforts to curb pollution caused by the banned material.

In Dhaka alone, 13 mobile courts led by DoE Executive Magistrates Kazi Tamjid Ahmed, Sultana Saleha Sumi and Fayzunnesa Akter targeted 27 establishments. These courts fined Tk 86,500 and confiscated approximately 3,980 kilograms of polythene.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change has vowed to maintain these enforcement actions as part of its broader strategy to combat environmental degradation and promote sustainable practices. Officials emphasized that polythene poses a significant threat to ecosystems, and such operations aim to ensure compliance with environmental laws.
The government has called for public cooperation in reporting illegal activities related to polythene production and distribution, underscoring the importance of collective efforts in protecting the environment.
