Protests erupt at DU demanding justice for Magura rape victim
  9, March, 2025, 10:36:18:AM

Online Report : Students of Dhaka University took to the streets at midnight, demanding a fair investigation and swift execution of the harshest punishment for rapists involved in incidents across the country.

The protesters, especially from the university`s halls, rallied for the perpetrators of 8-year-old Asiya`s rape in Magura to receive the maximum sentence.

Residential students from Sufia Kamal Hall stepped out around midnight on Sunday (March 9), later joined by students from Shahidullah Hall in solidarity.

The protesters chanted slogans such as "We want justice, we want justice," "No place for rapists in Bengal," "Who are you, who am I? Asiya, Asiya," "Catch every rapist, bury them one by one".

Students also demanded the resignation of interim government’s Home Affairs Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury. The students called for his removal due to his failure to address numerous incidents of rape and sexual violence, including the recent case of Asiya from Magura.

The students accused Jahangir Alam of failing to ensure the safety of women in the country and of not implementing proper punishments for rapists.

Abu Bakar Majumdar, central convener of Bangladesh Democratic Students’ Council, stated, “We have seen a culture of impunity in this country for a long time. We cannot allow this to continue. The Home Affairs Advisor has completely failed to control the situation in the country, and we demand his resignation."
