Conspiracy underway to prevent February election: Fakhrul
  17, July, 2025, 9:54:1:PM

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that a well-orchestrated conspiracy is underway to prevent the upcoming February 2026 national election, just as the country stands on the brink of democratic transition.

He made the remarks while addressing a memorial eventorganized by the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) in honor of student martyrs from the July movementheld at Dhaka University`s (DU) TSC auditorium on Thursday.

Fakhrul said, “We initiated the July student uprising for democracy, but now certain groups are working behind the scenes to block that path.

He pointed to a broader political agenda aimed at destabilizing the process, “Even after the interim government was formed and there was hope for change, some groups have begun laying traps to provoke chaos. They are trying to malign BNP and hinder our journey toward democratic restoration.”

He criticized targeted smear campaigns against BNP leaders on social media, saying, “They are using vulgar, defamatory language against our leaders, especially Tarique Rahman. Why? Because they’re afraid. These are not isolated attacks—they are part of a calculated effort to derail the democratic transition.”

Calling for unity and discipline within the party, Fakhrul added, “The BNP will not fall into any political trap. We must respond with patience and clarity. The announced timeline for the election must be upheld, and we are fully committed to that.”

He reminded the audience of the sacrifices made by the party, saying, “Over 20,000 of our activists have been killed without trial. Yet, BNP has never backed down from fighting fascism. Our history is one of resilience and courage.”

The BNP leader emphasized that the spirit of July 2024’s mass uprising belongs to the people, “Those trying to claim sole credit for the July movement are forgetting that it was the people’s uprising. The path to a democratic Bangladesh was paved by ordinary citizens, not any one group.”

He concluded with a message of hope and caution, “We’re at a turning point. This is our chance to build a truly democratic nation. Let’s not allow conspirators to hijack that future.”

The event was moderated by JCD General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir and presided over by President Rakibul Islam, with speeches from other key leaders.
