International Desk : Thousands of people across the United States have participated in protests against President Donald Trump. Demonstrators took to the streets in all 50 states to voice their opposition to some of the Republican president`s recent policies.
Protesters are calling these demonstrations a "new fight for freedom." Meanwhile, opinion polls indicate a decline in Trump`s popularity. This information was reported by the British news outlet BBC on Sunday (April 20th).
According to the BBC, thousands of people in all 50 U.S. states simultaneously took to the streets on Saturday to protest President Trump`s recent policies. The movement was called "50501" – signifying 50 states, 50 protests, one movement.
The demonstrations were timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolutionary War. Many protesters carried signs reading "No Kings," a symbol of the American Revolution against the British monarchy.
The central issues of the protests were immigration and government spending cuts. Demonstrations took place in front of the White House, in city centers across the country, and even in front of some Tesla showrooms. A prominent demand was the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a U.S. immigrant mistakenly deported to El Salvador.
Gihad Elgendy, a protester, told CNN, "Trump could pressure El Salvador to bring Garcia back."
Protesters also spoke out against the Trump administration`s "Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)," a project aimed at reducing government spending and jobs. Many view such measures as a threat to democratic structures.
While the protests across the U.S. were largely peaceful, some incidents of tension were reported. In one instance, Democratic Congressman Suhas Subramaniam was involved in an argument with a Trump supporter, a video of which went viral on social media.
Protesters are claiming a resurgence of the "spirit of freedom." The 50501 protests were also seen at events commemorating the battles of Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts. Thomas Basford, a protester, said, "This is another difficult time for our freedom. I wanted to teach my grandchildren how this country was built and that sometimes you have to fight for freedom."
Meanwhile, Trump`s popularity is declining in opinion polls. According to the latest Gallup poll, Trump`s approval rating has fallen to 45 percent, down from 47 percent at the start of his second term in January. The average first-quarter approval rating for presidents from 1952 to 2020 was 60 percent.
Public satisfaction with the U.S. economy has also decreased. A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that only 37 percent of Americans approve of Trump`s economic management, compared to 42 percent in January.
It`s noted that Saturday`s protests are not considered the largest. Earlier in April, a larger protest called "Hands Off" took place in 1,200 locations across all 50 states. That protest, following Trump`s re-election, is considered the largest.
