Govt plans land-based LNG terminal to boost gas supply
  25, April, 2025, 2:10:47:PM

Online Report : The interim government has announced plans to establish a land-based LNG terminal to ensure a consistent gas supply to factories across the country.

Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to Chief Adviser, revealed the decision in Doha on Thursday, stating that the move aims to address the ongoing issue of gas shortages, which has been hindering the establishment of new factories.

"Many are unable to set up factories due to the lack of gas. We are working to set up a land-based LNG terminal as quickly as possible to ensure sufficient gas supply," Alam said.

A plan for the terminal was presented to Qatar Energy during Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus’s recent visit to Doha. The initiative is expected to significantly increase the gas supply to factories in Bangladesh.

Alam also highlighted the success of Chief Adviser`s visit to Doha, calling it "one of the most successful and engaging visits."

He expressed hope that the visit would enhance Bangladesh`s global reputation and attract foreign investment.

Regarding the country`s economic recovery, Alam noted that under the interim government, Bangladesh has significantly reduced its outstanding debt, which was once at $3.2 billion during the previous regime. The debt is now down to $600 million, with the remaining balance expected to be cleared within a few months.

"This sends a positive signal to the world that Bangladesh is ready for business," Alam added.

Professor Yunus is scheduled to depart Doha for Rome today to attend the funeral of Pope Francis.
