(BSS) - The Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) has developed a premium quality Boro season rice variety named `BRRI Dhan-107`.
The institute observed that the newly developed rice has high protein and amylose.
This year, 20 farmers cultivated `BRRI-Dhan 107` in 20 demonstration plots in Gopalganj, Narail and Bagerhat districts with the cooperation of BRRI Gopalganj Regional Office, BRRI informed.
The farmers mentioned that they have made a lot of profit from the rice cultivation.
`BRRI Dhan-107` was released in 2024 for field cultivation across the country. The amylose content of this rice is 29.3 percent while the protein content is 10.2 percent.
It is a high yielding (Ufshi) Boro season variety. Additionally, the disease and insect attack in the breed is much less than any other common breed.
The life span of paddy is 148 days. This rice is capable of yielding 8.19 to 9.57 metric tonnes per hectare. `BRRI Rice-107` variety has yielded 8.75 metric tonnes in Gopalganj field.
Zeviar Halder, a farmer of Kotalipara upazila, told BSS that he cultivated `BRRI Rice-107` on 52 decimal lands with the cooperation and guidance of the Upazila Agriculture Office.
"I have measured the crop after cutting the paddy. The production of this paddy is more than other paddies. By cultivating this paddy, I have benefited by getting more yield. The price of this rice is also available in the market. Many farmers have expressed interest in planting this variety of paddy next year," he added.
Manoj Kumar Mridha, deputy assistant agriculture officer of Kotalipara upazila, said, "The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) will work on the expansion of paddy plantations of this variety. This will make the country more self-sufficient in food."
Amina Khatun, chief scientific officer of the regional office of Gopalganj BRRI, said this paddy will transform subsistence agriculture into commercial agriculture.
The paddy will play a major role in eliminating the malnutrition of the large population, she added.
