Autocratic regime turned police into partisan tool: Yunus
  29, April, 2025, 4:16:56:PM

Chief Adviser of the interim government, Dr Muhammad Yunus, addresses the inauguration ceremony of the three-day Police Week 2025 at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium in the capital on Tuesday.
Chief Adviser of the interim government Dr Muhammad Yunus has said that, through the concerted efforts of the police and other forces, the law and order situation in the country has now largely come under control.

He stated that during 15 years of autocratic rule, all necessary measures were taken to turn the country’s police force into a partisan tool. While executing the unlawful and unjust orders of the autocracy, the police faced widespread public outrage. Many honest officers also had to suffer the consequences.

Dr Yunus made these remarks on Tuesday (April 29) while addressing the inauguration ceremony of the three-day Police Week 2025, held at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium in the capital.

In his written speech, he noted that on the dark night of March 25, on the eve of the Liberation War in 1971, Bengali police personnel at the Rajarbagh police lines were the first to offer armed resistance. This, he said, is a significant chapter in the glorious history of the Bangladesh Police. On this occasion, he expressed deep respect for the martyred police personnel who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War.

He further said that when the interim government took office last August, the country’s law enforcement agencies were in a fragile state, with a disconnect between the police and the public. The government has since taken necessary steps to improve the situation. Measures include reducing chaos and public suffering on roads and highways, conducting special drives, strengthening police communication with stakeholders, and introducing motivational incentives to boost police morale.

Dr Yunus emphasized that ensuring the rights, dignity, and justice for people from all walks of life—without discrimination—has long been the aspiration of the people. Law enforcement agencies must play a vital role in fulfilling this goal.

He also said that due to the tireless efforts of police personnel, festivals such as Durga Puja, Bishwa Ijtema, Eid-ul-Fitr, and the Bengali New Year were celebrated peacefully. He acknowledged the police`s ongoing efforts to respond promptly to crimes across the country.

The Chief Adviser concluded by expressing sincere thanks to the police and all others involved for their contributions.
