The Chief Adviser`s Press Wing has strongly refuted a report by Indian newspaper The Hindu which alleged that Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, has targeted 640 journalists in the past eight months.
In a statement posted on its verified Facebook account, CA Press Wing Facts dismissed the claim as “a wildly misleading piece of disinformation” and labeled the report as fake.
The allegations, originally made by the Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG) and cited by ``The Hindu`` on World Press Freedom Day, claimed a crackdown on journalists under the current government. However, the Press Wing countered that the interim administration has not targeted the press and remains committed to press freedom.
“Many journalists previously linked to the Awami League regime may be under scrutiny,” the statement said, “but this is due to legal cases enabled by a flawed justice system built by the previous government — not because of any campaign by the interim administration.”
The statement also accused RRAG and its director, Suhas Chakma, of political bias and spreading disinformation supportive of the ousted Awami League. It pointed to previous allegedly exaggerated reports by the group, including claims of violence in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, which were later challenged by independent investigations, reports BSS.
The Press Wing emphasized that key figures in the current administration, including the Chief Adviser and his Press Secretary, are long-standing advocates for press freedom and transparency.
Reaffirming the interim government`s commitment to justice and accountability, the statement concluded, “Bangladesh is on a path to recovery — to become a nation where all citizens can live in security and dignity.”
