BNP vows action if members linked to ex-CEC mob incident
  23, June, 2025, 4:15:51:PM

BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed has said the party is against ‘mob culture’ and will take disciplinary action if any BNP leader or activist is found to be involved in the mob incident involving former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda.

He clarified the party’s position on Monday (June 23) afternoon.

“We do not believe in mob culture,” Salahuddin said. “We are relentlessly struggling to establish the rule of law in the country. We want to ensure the implementation of court verdicts, transparency in the judicial process, and uphold the rule of law.”

Regarding the arrest and treatment of the former CEC, he added: “We expect that the allegations against Nurul Huda, the process of his arrest, and the legal proceedings will be carried out in accordance with the law. However, the humiliating treatment he was subjected to is not acceptable to us. It is an isolated incident. If any BNP member is found involved, we will investigate and take disciplinary action. That is our position.”

Salahuddin further stated, “We want that no matter how serious a crime someone may have committed, their legal and constitutional rights must remain intact. These rights should not be violated under any circumstances.”

On Sunday night, a mob reportedly surrounded the house of former CEC KM Nurul Huda in Uttara, placed a garland of shoes around his neck, and harassed him. Videos of the incident have gone viral on social media.

Criticising the former CEC for alleged partisan behavior, Salahuddin said, “Nurul Huda is one of the key individuals responsible for destroying democracy and the electoral system in Bangladesh. He played a major role in prolonging the fascist rule of Sheikh Hasina by corrupting and undermining several important constitutional institutions.”
