Consensus Commission imposing nothing: Prof Ali Riaz
  7, July, 2025, 4:14:15:PM

Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, has reiterated that the commission is not imposing any decisions on political parties, but is instead working to foster dialogue and build common ground.

He said: “I have said it clearly, both in public and during separate meetings with political parties — the commission is not imposing anything.”

Ali Riaz made this remark on Monday during the opening of the second phase of political dialogues at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.

The 10-day dialogue series resumed with Monday’s session focusing on three key topics: expansion of subordinate courts at the upazila level, declaration of a state of emergency, and women’s political representation.

Riaz acknowledged that consensus could not be reached on all issues, citing early objections from parties regarding the inclusion of pluralism as a basic constitutional principle, and the proposed division of the country into four provinces — both of which were eventually dropped due to disagreements.

“It is not possible to agree on everything, but we must try to reach consensus where possible,” he said, noting that the commission is taking into account the views and sentiments expressed by different parties to revise its proposals accordingly.

He added that while some issues have already been discussed, others are yet to be presented. “We are making sincere, all-out efforts to reflect the aspirations and statements of political parties in a revised format,” Riaz said, emphasizing the commission`s commitment to transparency and mutual respect.

Addressing concerns over the political calendar, Riaz acknowledged that July is packed with party activities. “We understand your schedules may make participation difficult, but we hope you will continue engaging with us despite the time constraints.”

Monir Haider, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser moderated the Monday’s meeting. Commission members Safar Raj Hossain, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, and Dr. Ayub Mia attended the event.
