Floods submerge 60 villages in Feni; Army, BGB join rescue efforts
  10, July, 2025, 11:00:27:PM

Widespread flooding has hit Feni’s Parshuram, Phulgazi and Chhagalnaiya upazilas, submerging at least 60 villages and leaving over 100,000 people stranded, as heavy monsoon rains and upstream water from India continue to swell local rivers.

The Muhuri, Kohua and Silonia rivers have breached embankments at 21 points, causing floodwaters to surge into residential areas.

Homes, roads and infrastructure have been submerged, paralyzing daily life across the affected regions.

Responding to the crisis, the Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) deployed personnel on Thursday afternoon to assist in rescue and relief operations. Speedboats have been mobilized for evacuation efforts in the hardest-hit areas.Bangladesh tourism guide

Locals reported worsening conditions. “Since noon, new areas are going under water. The strong current is sweeping through homes,” said Abul Kalam, a resident of Chhagalnaiya. “Despite changes in government, our fate never changes.”

Another local, Safiqul Islam, described isolation caused by the flood. “Water on the roads has cut us off. We can’t even contact our relatives,” he said.

Rabeya Khatun from Jangal Ghona village said her family’s tube well is submerged and they are surviving on rainwater and dry food. “We haven’t cooked in two days as water flooded our kitchen stove,” she said.

According to Feni weather office, 63.1 mm of rainfall was recorded in 24 hours until 3 PM Thursday. Moderate to heavy rainfall has continued for four consecutive days and is likely to persist.

Abul Kashem, Sub-Divisional Engineer of Feni Water Development Board, stated that though water levels have begun to drop, breaches in embankments are allowing further inundation. Repair work will begin once water levels recede, he said.

Lt. Col. Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, commander of BGB’s Feni Battalion (4 BGB), confirmed that BGB members have been distributing cooked meals and assisting in rescue operations since Wednesday.

Feni Deputy Commissioner (DC) Saiful Islam said that over one lakh people in Parshuram, Phulgazi, Chhagalnaiya and parts of Feni Sadar are affected. Army and BGB units have begun relief work, and Tk 1.75 million has been allocated for emergency assistance across the district’s six upazilas.
