BAU hosts 2-day fishing festival in festive spirit
  5, July, 2025, 2:22:0:PM

A two-day recreational fishing competition was held in a lively and festive atmosphere at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) in Mymensingh, drawing enthusiastic participation from anglers across the region.

The event began on Thursday at 3:00 PM and concluded on Friday afternoon. A total of 42 amateur fishing enthusiasts took part in the competition, which was organized by Faculty of Fisheries.

The prize-giving ceremony took place on Friday afternoon at scenic bank of Pond No. 3, near the `Bhratrittwer Mohona` ghat and adjacent to Isha Khan Hall.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A K Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan graced the event as chief guest and handed out awards to the winners.

The ceremony was presided over by Prof. Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam Sarder, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries. Student Affairs Adviser Prof. Dr. Muhammad Shahidul Haque was present as a special guest.

The event was conducted by Senior Scientific Officer Mohammad Abu Taher, with the presence of several notable university officials, including Fish Farm in-charge Prof. Dr. Mohammad Matiur Rahman, Proctor Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Alim, and other faculty members, staffs and anglers from different parts of Mymensingh.

In his address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Bhuiyan praised the organizers for reviving such a cheerful event and encouraged making it an annual tradition. He also suggested that each participant should receive a small token of appreciation—such as a cap—in future competitions. He expressed hope that upcoming editions would see even more participation and grandeur.

Participant Aminul Islam, a resident of Mymensingh city, shared his joy, “It’s wonderful to see this event return after many years. Fishing in such a peaceful setting was a real pleasure. Everything was well-organized and enjoyable.”

Prof. Dr. Rafiqul Islam Sarder noted that participants included teachers, students, officers and staff members from various parts of Mymensingh. Fishing spots were assigned through a lottery system, and the top three prizes were awarded to those who caught the largest fish—approximately 9 kg, 8 kg, and 7 kg, respectively.

The event reflected a perfect blend of competition, camaraderie, and relaxation, and marked a successful effort to bring the BAU community together through shared recreation.
