DMP lauds BNP for canal cleaning drive instead of rallying on streets
  2, September, 2025, 4:55:35:PM

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has publicly thanked the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for launching a voluntary canal and sewer cleaning programme in Dhaka, instead of holding foundation anniversary rallies on city streets.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, September 2, the DMP said political rallies and processions on busy roads in the densely populated capital cause severe traffic congestion and public suffering.

Against this backdrop, BNP’s alternative initiative was described as “creative, people-friendly, and exemplary.”

The statement recalled that during a view-sharing meeting on August 23, political parties had been urged to avoid road-blocking programmes and consider alternative approaches. “The BNP’s initiative is a reflection of that call,” the DMP said.

DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali added: “We have repeatedly appealed to political leaders to ensure city dwellers do not suffer due to political programmes. The innovative step taken by BNP is undoubtedly commendable.”

The DMP expressed “sincere thanks and gratitude” to the BNP for opting for a constructive approach in the larger interest of the city.
