The Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has stated that elections cannot be held unless the July Charter is fully implemented.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon at the Tourism Motel in Rangpur, Nahid Islam emphasized that elections should only proceed after completing the July Charter process and the roadmap for justice. “We also want elections to be held quickly. The country needs stability and public trust, and for that, the reform process must be completed without delay,” he said.

Commenting on the current national situation, he said the public had high expectations following the mass uprising. “People want change. I can sense their fear that things may return to the old ways, with the possible return of authoritarianism or fascism. They want a space to voice their concerns,” he noted.

Nahid Islam also criticised the rise of corruption, misrule, and social fascism after August 5, stressing that no single group can unilaterally lead the country. “A government can only be sustainable if there is minimum consensus among all parties,” he added.

Regarding reforms and justice, he said, “Ignoring public demand for reform and rushing into elections will not lead to sustainable change. Minimum reforms are essential for stable change, and any government delaying this must answer to the people.”

On NCP’s electoral strategy, Nahid Islam stated the party is preparing independently but remains open to cooperation for the country’s greater good. He also expressed support for the first proposal of the Consensus Commission, pledging to sign the certificate once implementation is finalized.

On constitutional reform, he said, “If a referendum is held, it is the responsibility of the next government to amend the constitution. If the Consensus Commission’s proposals are not passed in time, automatic amendments are appropriate.”

Earlier, Nahid Islam met with the conveners’ committees of eight districts and the metropolitan area in Rangpur, with NCP Secretary Akhtar Hossain and Northern Regional Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam among those present.
