Heavy rain, thunderstorm disrupt morning commute in Dhaka
  29, April, 2026, 11:47:25:AM

Dhaka woke up to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms early Wednesday morning, bringing temporary relief from the recent heat but causing widespread disruption to daily routines.

The downpour began around 6:45 AM, catching many residents unprepared. Office workers, students and low-income earners were among the hardest hit, as many were drenched while scrambling for shelter in nearby shops and buildings. Even those carrying umbrellas struggled to stay dry amid the intensity of the rain.

Commuters faced significant challenges getting to work and school due to a shortage of public transport.

Taking advantage of the situation, some rickshaw pullers and autorickshaw drivers were reported to be charging unusually high fares.

The Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall across the country over the next 24 hours starting from 9 AM Wednesday. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty winds and lightning, are expected in many areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, and Sylhet divisions.

A few places in Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions may also experience similar conditions.

Additionally, moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.
