Bangladesh and China Seek to Deepen Partnership in Higher Education and Research

A 12-member delegation led by Professor Chen Dongxiao, President of the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS), paid a courtesy call on Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.B.M. Obaidul Islam at his office on Thursday, marking a new initiative to expand joint education and research cooperation between Dhaka University and several Chinese higher education institutions.

The delegation included vice presidents and researchers from a number of leading Chinese universities. Among them were Professor Duan Xingwu, Vice President of Yunnan University; Professor Fan Daqi, Vice President of the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies; Professor Lü Peiming, Vice President of Tongji University; and Professor Wu Qian, Vice President of East China Normal University.

Following the meeting, members of the delegation attended a full meeting of the Academic Board of the “Center for China Studies” at the Vice-Chancellor’s conference room. The session was chaired by Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.B.M. Obaidul Islam and attended by senior representatives from several Bangladeshi universities.

Invited guests included Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Abdus Salam, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.M. Sarwaruddin Chowdhury, Noakhali Science and Technology University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Ismail, and University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Shamsad Mortuza.

Speaking at the meeting, Professor Dr. A.B.M. Obaidul Islam said Dhaka University is highly interested in working with Chinese universities to create new educational opportunities for young people and ensure a stronger environment for advanced research. He emphasized the importance of expanding teacher-student exchange programmes and enhancing technical training initiatives.

Representatives of the Chinese delegation also expressed their commitment to supporting the improvement of higher education standards in Bangladesh and strengthening academic relations between the two countries.

Officials including Professor Dr. Syeda Rozana Rashid, Director of Dhaka University’s International Affairs Office, were also present at the meeting.
