Chapainawabganj Correspondent: Sadia Clinic and Diagnostic Centre in Shibganj is allegedly operating openly despite lacking a renewed licence and facing multiple allegations of malpractice, including patient deaths due to alleged medical negligence.

An on-the-ground investigation found the facility conducting surgeries, medical consultations, and diagnostic tests without a valid license, in violation of government regulations. The center reportedly submitted an online application for licensing to the Directorate General of Health Services but continued operations while the application remains pending.

During a visit to the clinic, most rooms were locked. A woman was found sleeping near the reception during daytime. When woken, she called a nurse. The woman, who identified herself as a nurse, admitted she holds no official nursing registration. “I have an honors and master’s degree in Islamic History and work here as a nurse,” she said.

She claimed the clinic employs four nurses in total, but only one is a nursing student. The other three have academic backgrounds in general studies, not nursing.

The clinic’s owner, Dr. Md. Shafiul Islam, allegedly provides treatment himself. He faces accusations of causing a maternal death through alleged medical negligence. Multiple victims, speaking on condition of anonymity, raised similar complaints against Sadia Clinic and Diagnostic Center.

Despite reports that clinical activities had halted, the facility recently published a notice seeking to hire more nurses. The move has sparked heavy criticism on social media. Local residents also allege unethical practices are taking place at the center.

When contacted by phone, Dr. Shafiul Islam said, “The clinic is neither running nor closed. Operations are slow due to financial problems.” Asked about license renewal, he said an application has been submitted and is pending.

Civil Surgeon Dr. A.K.M. Shahab Uddin said the matter would be investigated. “If the allegations are found true, strict legal action will be taken,” he said. He added that authorities are taking a tough stance against illegal clinics across the district and will take necessary measures.

The case adds to a pattern of complaints against Sadia Clinic and Diagnostic Center. Reports of patient deaths linked to alleged medical errors have surfaced over the past few years on social media and in local media, but officials say no substantive action has been taken so far.

Health officials say operating a clinic or diagnostic center without a valid license and employing unqualified staff violates the Medical Practice and Private Clinics and Diagnostic Centers Ordinance. Legal experts note that such violations can lead to closure, fines, and criminal charges if negligence is proven.

The Civil Surgeon’s office has indicated that district-wide inspections of unregistered and non-compliant health facilities are underway.
