Special Correspondent: The People`s Rights Party (PRP) has demanded the replacement of Bangladesh’s existing judicial system with a framework based on Islamic principles, arguing that the current legal structure has failed to ensure justice, public safety, and accountability.

The demand was raised at a human chain organized by the party in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on Saturday.

Addressing the programme, PRP Chairman Sarder Md. Abdus Sattar criticized the country`s legal and judicial system, describing it as a legacy of colonial-era rule that no longer serves the interests of the people. He called for the implementation of a judicial framework guided by the teachings of the Holy Quran and Islamic jurisprudence.

Abdus Sattar alleged that the existing judiciary is often influenced by political considerations, claiming that the outcomes of certain high-profile cases vary depending on an individual`s political status and influence. Such practices, he said, have weakened public confidence in the rule of law and the justice delivery system.

Expressing concern over rising incidents of rape, murder, abduction, and violence against women and children, the PRP chief said the country has witnessed an alarming increase in such crimes in recent years. He attributed the situation to lengthy judicial processes, inadequate enforcement of laws, and what he described as a prevailing culture of impunity.

He also identified social and cultural degradation, drug abuse, exposure to harmful online content, and declining moral values as factors contributing to the deterioration of law and order.

According to Abdus Sattar, many citizens no longer feel secure, while offenders frequently evade punishment. He questioned the effectiveness of the current legal framework and stressed the need for stronger deterrents against serious crimes.

Referring to Islamic teachings, he argued that justice should be administered in accordance with divine guidance and urged the government to introduce a judicial system based on Islamic law. He also called for strict punishment for those convicted of rape and murder.

The human chain was also addressed by Advocate Md. Alamgir, Chairman of the Bangladesh Democratic Party; Md. Delwar Hossain, Chairman of the Bangladesh Mukti Party; Md. Robiul Awal, Chairman of the Bangladesh Ekushey Party; Md. Abul Hashem, Chairman of the Bangladesh Sarbojanin Alliance; Md. Sabbir Khan, Vice Chairman of the Gonoodhikar Party; Haji Md. Tarikul Islam, Joint Secretary General; and Md. Mobarak Hossain, Joint Organizing Secretary.

The programme concluded with participants calling for comprehensive judicial reforms and the establishment of what they described as a fair, effective, and people-oriented justice system rooted in Islamic principles.
