Special Correspondent: People`s Rights Party (PRP) Chairman Sardar Md. Abdus Sattar has received the Mother Teresa Peace Award 2026 in recognition of his efforts to promote a society free from unemployment and corruption.

The award was presented at a discussion and award-giving ceremony titled “Mother Teresa: A Great Woman for the Welfare of Humanity”, organised by the Mother Teresa Research Council in the capital on Saturday, August 15.

The programme began at 4pm at the Economic Reporters’ Forum auditorium at Paltan Tower in the capital.

Sattar was honoured as a “pioneer in building an unemployment-free and corruption-free country.” According to the organisers, the recognition reflects his stated commitment to addressing unemployment and taking a strong position against corruption, inspired by the ideals of Mother Teresa.

Senior Supreme Court lawyer and freedom fighter Justice Mir Hasmat Ali attended the programme as the chief guest. Former foreign secretary and Ambassador Masud Mannan, ndc, was the chief discussant.

Additional Secretary of the Bangladesh government Md. Zakir Hossain; Professor Dr. Md. Morshedul Alam, chairman of the Department of Islamic History and Culture at the University of Chittagong; Dr. Meherun Nisa Meherin, editor and publisher of the national daily Bangali`r Kantha; M. Gafur Uddin Chowdhury, senior vice-president of the Bangladesh Union Parishad Forum; and Sabbir Uddin Ahmed, principal of Cordova International School and College, attended the event as special guests.

Dr. A.T.M. Momtazul Karim, adviser to the Mother Teresa Research Council, presided over the programme.

Speakers at the discussion highlighted Mother Teresa’s lifelong commitment to serving vulnerable and disadvantaged people and discussed how the values associated with her work could be applied to present-day Bangladesh.

They stressed that building a humane society requires sustained efforts to tackle unemployment and corruption. The speakers said the award was intended to recognise individuals working toward those goals and to encourage greater public engagement in humanitarian and social development activities.

At the conclusion of the programme, the guests presented Sattar with a commemorative crest and certificate.

In his welcome address, M.H. Arman Chowdhury, secretary-general of the Mother Teresa Research Council, thanked the guests and participants and urged everyone to continue working for the welfare of humanity.

The event was organised to mark the 116th birth anniversary of Mother Teresa, whose legacy of service to the poor, sick and vulnerable continues to inspire humanitarian initiatives around the world.
