Bangladesh secure historic Test win over WI in 15 years
  4, December, 2024, 11:39:21:AM

Bangladesh clinched a monumental 101-run victory over the West Indies in the second Test at Sabina Park, marking their first Test win in the Caribbean in 15 years.

This victory leveled the two-match series 1-1 and ended a drought dating back to 2009.

Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam and batter Jaker Ali delivered standout performances that steered Bangladesh to triumph. Taijul claimed 5 for 50 in the fourth innings, his 15th five-wicket haul in Tests, dismantling the West Indies` chase of a 287-run target. Support from seamers Hasan Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed, and Nahid Rana sealed the home team`s fate, as they were bowled out for 185.

Earlier, Jaker Ali`s blistering 91 in the second innings bolstered Bangladesh`s position. Starting day four at 193 for 5, Jaker added 62 crucial runs in the morning session, despite an early scare when he was struck on the helmet by Alzarri Joseph. His counter-attacking innings included five sixes and eight boundaries, propelling Bangladesh to 268 and setting a formidable target.

The West Indies` chase began with promise as captain Kraigg Brathwaite contributed 43 and Kavem Hodge top-scored with 55. However, Taijul`s brilliance dismantled their middle order, with the final six wickets falling for just 42 runs. The Sabina Park pitch`s uneven bounce and turn proved decisive, as the hosts faltered under pressure.

Bangladesh`s stand-in captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz praised the team`s collective effort, particularly the bowlers. "Nahid in the first innings, Taskin and Hasan Mahmud were exceptional, and Taijul`s spell in the second innings was phenomenal," he said.

The victory underscores Bangladesh`s growing prowess in Test cricket, with 2024 shaping up as a standout year, equaling their record of four Test wins in a calendar year. Contributions from seasoned players and rising stars like Jaker Ali and Nahid Rana highlight their progress in away conditions.

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite acknowledged his team`s shortcomings. "The batting group needs consistency and hard work," he remarked, pointing to their struggles against Bangladesh`s disciplined bowling attack.

With the Test series concluded, both teams now turn their attention to the upcoming white-ball series, featuring three ODIs and three T20Is.
